Purpose/Event:
The Alabama Association for Justice ("ALAJ"), will be holding its Fall Forum on September 22-24, 2021, at The Lodge at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The forum will be organized around a formal program or agenda of educational or informational sessions and/or other presentations concerning legal, legislative, and other issues important to members of the Alabama Association for Justice. The present plan is to call the program "Good Lawyers Good Laws Legislative & Leadership Forum - On a Journey for Justice." Part of the program will be devoted to informing ALAJ leadership how best to interact with members of the legislature and other public officials and employees and informing legislators and other public officials and employees of matters important to their dealings with lawyers generally, and Plaintiffs lawyers in particularly. In addition to ALAJ staff and leadership, other invitees will be ALAJ's lobbying team, the Lieutenant Governor and his chief of staff; members and clerks of the Alabama Senate and House Judiciary Committees; the Presidents pro tern of the Alabama Senate and House and their chiefs of staff; the Speaker of the House; the Majority and Minority Leaders of the Senate and House; the Chairs of the Senate and House Rules Committees; the Director of the Legislative Services Agency; other public officials who are among the presenters; and the mayors of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Mobile. A copy of the invitation list is included with this letter. Other than with respect to the mayors who live in the area, up to two nights of hotel accommodations will be provided for the public officials/ employees and their spouses who attend, and the public officials and employees will be invited to attend and participate in the meetings, dining, refreshments, a Wednesday night reception that will include heavy hor d'oeuvres and a bar, and other events and refreshments in the same fashion as other attendees. Present plans in that regard are set out in the tentative program included with this letter. On Thursday night of the event, rather than ALAJ hosting a dinner at the lodge, several ALAJ leaders will take small groups of public officials and their spouses to dinner at restaurants with the idea being to discuss informally some of the informational/educational matters covered in the meetings. It is contemplated that these discussions will relate largely to the relationship between lawyers and public officials and to how they should ideally deal with each other. These dinners are an integral part of the retreat. They will not be drawn out affairs as ALAJ has a planned event at the lodge (a rum and/or bourbon tasting arranged by the ABC Board with its vendor Republic National) that will start no later than 9 pm Thursday night. There will be no other retreat related events during the time of the small dinners. In addition to ALAJ leaders paying for the Thursday night dinners, certain events at the Retreat may be sponsored.; certain vendors are general "sponsors", although they are called Fellows for ALAJ. A list of the Fellows is included.
